Choosing the White Mug
Before every great journey comes a simple decision: to begin. A quiet morning, a simple white mug, and a reminder that every day, and every journey, begins with a blank canvas waiting to become something extraordinary.

This morning, in my bleary-eyed trek to the coffee pot with my mind still full of dreams from the night before, I reached into the cabinet to select my choice of vessel to hold the juice of life upon which I rely for consciousness.
Before me stood a bevy of choices. Flowers. Painted landscapes. Christmas patterns. Each one seemed to carry a story all its own.
But then my eyes settled on the white mug.
Barely awake, I reached for the unassuming piece of ceramic as if guided by an unseen hand. It wasn't the prettiest. It wasn't the most colorful. Yet there was something about its simplicity that drew me in.
As the coffee filled the empty vessel, so too did my thoughts.
The white mug became more than a mug. It became a blank canvas waiting for the first brushstroke. Empty, not because it lacked anything, but because it was ready to receive whatever the day might pour into it.
Cradling it between my hands, I stepped onto the front porch.
The morning had not yet asked anything of me.
Before me stretched an unwritten day.
And beyond that, an unwritten life.
What conversations would I have? What opportunities would appear? What disappointments would ask something of me? What unexpected joys might be quietly waiting just around the bend?
Perhaps only fate knows.
The funny thing about life is that we rarely recognize the moments that change us while we're living them.
A conversation with a stranger.
An unexpected detour.
A decision made despite uncertainty.
A plane ticket purchased to a place we've never been.
We imagine transformation arrives with fanfare, when more often it slips quietly into our lives disguised as an ordinary Tuesday.
I've spent enough time traveling to know that every journey begins the same way.
You choose to go.
Not because you know exactly what waits on the other side, but because something inside you believes the unknown has something worth discovering.
Fear still comes.
Questions still linger.
You wonder if you're making the right choice, if you'll know what to do, if you'll find your way.
Then, little by little, you do.
Perhaps life isn't asking us to be fearless after all.
Perhaps it is simply asking us to trust ourselves enough to take the next step, believing that when we arrive at life's next intersection, we'll recognize the road meant for us.
So this morning, I chose the white mug.
Not because it had all the answers.
But because it reminded me that every day arrives wonderfully unfinished.
Every sunrise hands us another blank canvas.
Another opportunity to become.
What will you do with your white mug today?
